Jonathan Rader’s Expertise I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Tyson Hedrick's lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I anticipate that I will complete and defend my dissertation in the summer of 2021. I love research, but I also derive a great deal of personal satisfaction from sharing the topics that compel me with students. I am seeking a career that balances teaching with research. My research focus is on the functional morphology, mechanics, and ecological consequences of animal locomotion. I use a multidisciplinary approach to address big-picture biological questions that would be otherwise intractable. Through my M.Sc. and Ph.D. work, I have employed a variety of technologies to uncover the associations between avian morphology, ecology, and the evolutionary processes that shape them. These include 3D videography to track free-flying birds, 3D scanning of bird wings to quantify wing shape, and stable isotope analysis of feather keratin to estimate the dietary and geographic niches of South American ovenbirds (genus Cinclodes) to test a fundamental macroecological hypothesis: Brown’s Resource Breadth Hypothesis. Throughout my graduate studies, I worked closely with undergraduate research assistants, and mentored two students through independent research projects.
