Joseph Gotoff’s Expertise Cellist and musicologist Joseph Gotoff is in high demand as a chamber musician, scholar, and teacher. He has given the world premiere for several important works, including Lowell Liebermann’s Piano Trio (2013) and Binna Kim’s Shibboleth for solo cello (2016), and his performances have garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. As the founding cellist of the award-winning Petrucci Quartet, he is devoted to musicological exploration of composers' manuscripts, especially the late string quartet manuscripts of Beethoven. He is the principal cellist of the Unitas Ensemble, an orchestra dedicated to promoting music from South and Latin America, as well as a member of the Boston Cello Ensemble, formed in 2017. He joined the Orchestra of Indian Hill as Assistant Principal Cellist in 2018. A dedicated educator, Dr. Gotoff maintains a studio of 17 students grades 3-12 in the Arlington public schools, in addition to his private studio. At the higher ed level, he has held appointments as an instructor of cello and chamber music at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, Bunker Hill Community College, and Merrimack College. Joseph began playing the cello at age 10, and early on developed a love for chamber music. His principal mentors have included the renowned cellist Orlando Cole, the Brentano String Quartet, Barbara Stein-Mallow and Yeesun Kim. Dr. Gotoff received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Cello Performance in degree from New England Conservatory, with a dissertation that focused on deciphering markings in Beethoven manuscripts.
