Keith Berquist’s Expertise What do music and marketing have in common? Besides both being creative professions, each requires an exceptional ear. The simplest, most effective way to sell an idea, a product, or an experience is to give your customers what they want; and the best way to know what your customers want is to listen. The internet has given marketers novel tools to reach audiences. It has also created unprecedented new opportunities for us to hear from those same audiences, allowing businesses to use personal, creative, engaging methods to serve their customers. These are a few ways I have developed my ear as a marketer: • Using Google Analytics & Facebook Ads Manager, I pulled information from pixels & UTM-tagged links and developed a database to log all digital marketing campaigns. I employed a series of Excel formulas that measured KPIs and made results filterable by campaign, source, and medium. This allowed for apples-to-apples comparisons across marketing efforts. Listening to our audiences by observing their behavior provided valuable feedback, insights which directly informed future budget allocation. • Managing social media accounts gave me the chance to communicate directly with fans, particularly by developing creative promotions that encourage engagement. One such campaign was a scavenger hunt with on-and-offline components. Show posters were placed at locations of musical significance across the city. Clues were posted on social media, and fans could win a pair of tickets by finding a poster, snapping a picture, and uploading it with a unique hashtag. The contest drove show-specific awareness, increasing event ticket sales. It also led to new page likes, which expanded our venue audience pool for future campaigns. • In launching a venue street team, the simple goal was to create awareness by placing marketing materials in high traffic locations. However, the larger objective was to use street team efforts as a foot-in-the-door to develop strategic partnerships with local businesses. I developed close ties with owners/managers at local record stores, coffee shops, breweries, bars, and bike shops. These relationships helped connect our venue with the larger community and proved invaluable when trying to engage new audiences. Marketing allows me to exercise creativity and connect people through unique, memorable experiences.
