The role involved negotiating, shaping and sustaining employment of military capability on complex operational scenarios, from urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to possible major combat interventions. Leading a high-caliber multinational team in uncertain and volatile environments requires political skill, EQ patience & perspective. I know how to create a unifying momentum amongst a diverse team. In 2021 I was Deputy Commander of a military coalition consisting of 12,000 soldiers from 20 nations to fight Da'esh/ISIS. Based in Iraq, with military positioned across the Levant, I drew upon a vast international force from the Iraqi forces, Syrian militia, international organisations and national state representatives, to deliver the final defeat of ISIS. It was the ‘high watermark’ of my military career. I’ve led soldiers twice in Afghanistan, the latter being a Regimental Group of over 1200 personnel, for which I was humbly awarded the OBE. In 2004, I deployed to Banda Ache, Indonesia to manage UK’s support following the Asian Tsunami; working alongside international organisations and charities, I coordinated aid delivery to destroyed & isolated communities. In the 1990’s, my formative years as an officer, as part of a NATO force, I helped enforce the fragile peace to dampen the ethnic tensions in Bosnia & Kosovo. I am passionate about mentoring & coaching. Having been an instructor at the world renowned Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and taught Masters level in International Relations and Strategy at UK’s Defence Academy, I know the value in nurturing and unlocking potential. As a retired Major General, I’m proud to remain a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Engineers and President Royal Engineer Winter Sports: its aim to place over 600 soldiers a year in arduous winter conditions - to improve fitness, leadership and mental resilience.
