Kevin Coughlin’s Expertise Working as a senior technical photographer at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is an exhilarating and intellectually stimulating experience. The laboratory, located in Upton, New York, is renowned for its cutting-edge research in various scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science. As a technical photographer, my role goes beyond conventional photography. I'm an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with scientists, engineers, and researchers to visually document their experiments and projects. Oftentimes, the work involves capturing precise and high-quality images that are crucial for analysis, documentation, and publication in scientific journals. One of the unique aspects of being a technical photographer at BNL is the diverse range of subjects I get to photograph. From particle accelerators and detectors to advanced imaging equipment, my lens captures the intricate details of scientific apparatus that push the boundaries of human knowledge. The challenging nature of these subjects demands not only technical proficiency in photography but also a deep understanding of the scientific processes involved. On any given day, I might find myself documenting experiments in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) or the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), both of which are world-class facilities at BNL. The dynamic and fast-paced environment requires adaptability and a keen eye for detail, as I navigate through complex setups and rapidly changing experimental conditions. Collaboration is a key aspect of the job. I work closely with researchers to understand their specific imaging needs and ensure that the visual documentation aligns with the scientific goals of the project. This collaboration extends to post-processing, where I apply my skills in image editing and enhancement to produce clear, accurate, and visually appealing results. The intersection of science and art becomes apparent in the role as I strive to convey complex scientific concepts through visually engaging images. My photographs may find their way into scientific publications, presentations, and outreach materials, contributing to the broader communication of BNL's groundbreaking research. Overall, being a technical photographer at Brookhaven National Laboratory is a unique and fulfilling experience, where my skills as a visual storyteller contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
