In the process, I have witnessed the 'good, bad, and ugly' of leadership in organizations from a perspective outside their operational pillars. Corporate ladder-climbing held little interest for me, feeling that such a path was inauthentic to my desire for a deeper sense of purpose. However, I did not know yet what would ignite my passion and sense of purpose. Between 2005 and 2009, I spent much of my free time learning about the environmental crises which humanity faces: Global Climate Change, Deforestation, Desertification, Oceanic Acidification, Soil Depletion, Mass Species Extinctions and loss of Biodiversity, to name a few. Like many, I held out hope that human ingenuity and development of new technologies would somehow save us from these catastrophes. However, as I learned about already existing technologies and design principles such as those found in Permaculture, I became increasingly frustrated. Adoption of these technologies dragged due, in part, to a natural resistance to change, but also due to their short-term costs being adverse to corporate quarterly P&L statements and share value. This brought me to realize how environmental sustainability is deeply interconnected with matters of social- and economic- justice and that the current hegemony of neo-liberal capitalism is inadequate to the task of addressing these crises. This is when I decided that keeping Planet Earth habitable for future generations is not so much a technological problem as it is a *cultural* problem. Asking myself, "how can I help to change the culture?" I finally found my purpose in the answer. I returned to college in 2013 majoring in Organizational Leadership, apprehending leadership as "the art and science of culture change." After graduating in 2017, I started a M.A. in Organizational Leadership, completing dual concentrations in Organizational Training & Development and Professional & Executive Coaching. I have always enjoyed supporting people, focusing on the user support side of my career in IT. Now, I find great satisfaction in coaching purpose-driven individuals to develop as authentic, 'servant' leaders who will use their influence to make this world more peaceful, just, and sustainable for future generations.
