In 2011, when the Arab Spring erupted across the Middle East, and demonstrations played out in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, stories began surfacing about human rights violations coming out of Syria, including the use of chemical weapons against the civilian population. Initially, it seemed that attention was being diverted from the stories of chlorine barrel bombs and sarin gas attacks, especially when large droves of the population began fleeing Syria and flooding into the neighboring countries seeking refuge and protection. In an effort to create an open source of information for the stories coming out of Syria and the region, Lara Kajs started a website – The Genocide Report – which she later turned into a humanitarian and educational nonprofit in Washington, D.C. The original goal was to bring more attention to the Syrian crisis. Soon after we began receiving emails and sources from other people reporting atrocity crimes, crisis and displacements that were happening in other countries and it just grew from there. Ms. Kajs has published articles and opinion pieces on human rights and regularly speaks on human rights issues to universities, associations and at conferences. She is a member of the INoGS, the IAGS and the AHA. Lara holds a master’s in History with an emphasis in Genocide Studies and a M.Ed. She consults with the UN and the ICC.
