  I am a technology and policy advisor, lawyer, foresight expert, entrepreneur, business mentor, international facilitator, and advocate for digital freedoms, environmental sustainability, human rights, safety and well-being. I was also part of early international discussions on Digital Identity, and lead author of the 2006 UN publication on Digital Life. I have lectured on media law/regulation (e.g. free speech, IPRs). In a past life, I worked at the Canadian Human Rights Centre, and in Legal Aid to support those afflicted with HIV. Some of what I've enjoyed writing: "The Evolution of Social Interactions in the Networked Space", "Ubiquity for Humanity", "Dissemination and Acquisition of Knowledge in the Mobile Age", "Mobile Mania, Mobile Manners", "Improving Food Safety And Traceability While Empowering Smallholders Through ICT", "Radio-enabled environments for independent living". I've designed programs to reduce gaps between developing and developed countries in their ability to influence international tech and policy standards, and facilitated international collaboration within and between regions (Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe) among businesses, civil society & governments. I appreciate the ways in which technology can help solve important social and planet-wide problems. However, I am also concerned about how technology for technology’s sake alone can have a devastating impact on social progress, civil liberties, and society as a whole. I believe that a renewed awareness of the interdependence of society (and of people) is vital to solving our current human crises, from authoritarianism and corporate greed to pandemics, sustainability and the surveillance society.
