  I was born and raised in small town Nebraska. At the time I didn’t realize it. But it turns out our family were progressives. That’s not as uncommon as some might think. My great-great grandfather came to Nebraska and advocated for the rights of the Santee Sioux 150 years ago. His concern, for those who could use a helping hand, has flowed down to me. I graduated toward the top of my class in the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s Architecture program. Though never working in architecture I feel what I learned gave me a mind which can calmly find solutions to problems which others struggle with. You could call me a lateral thinker. I tried to be our family lumber company’s fifth generation until it ceased operations during tough rural economic times. I have spent most of my career as a residential structural designer. More specifically I have designed EWP floor systems for multiple decades and trusses for a decade. In both cases, they are highly efficient uses of wood with very limited waste. On occasion, I have been asked to oversee areas of operations to improve efficiencies in inventory and optimization to make the entire process even more efficient and less wasteful. I have educated myself in the future of wood, Mass Timber. It is vindicating that the construction material I was born into and have been drawn to throughout my career is also the kindest to the environment. In fact, it’s not even close. The harvest of wood from properly managed forests is far less damaging to the planet than the extraction of the materials it takes to produce steel and concrete. And that’s only the half of it. Wood is a carbon sink which sequesters tremendous amounts of carbon if it never burns or decays. I am quite passionate about smarter design and construction techniques such as well sealed building envelopes, use of solar, reuse of wood recaptured from decommissioned structures, etc. The Passive House movement is making a positive difference that will hopefully increase exponentially as time goes on. I feel I am an effective writer and an accomplished photographer. I am a cyclist and enjoy seeing our trail systems continue to extend and interconnect. I enjoy travel and travel planning.
