I've built a lot of software infrastructure to support that goal. In particular, I started and led an effort to build a specialized Workflow management system tailored to Machine Learning and Experimentation use cases within Google AI Perception. I also built a single machine, cross platform, graph based modular media processing framework which is now open-sourced as MediaPipe (a 6 year effort that saw me go from Individual Contributor, to Tech Lead, to Manager with 5 reports). I completed my Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis where my area was Manifold Learning as applied to Computer Vision problems. I even subsequently saw my dream unification work get published by someone much better at research than me and then promptly be forgotten by everyone (probably including the author).
