Mark Byrnes’s Expertise Mr. Byrnes has 37 years of experience performing drinking water quality studies, designing groundwater monitoring and production well networks, and overseeing groundwater/soil characterization and remediation activities at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Air Force, USAID, and private industry installations across the country, as well as in Italy, Jordan, Guam, India, and South Africa. Mr. Byrnes is responsible for managing an annual budget ranging from 5M/year to 16M/year that has includes the operation and maintenance of a large groundwater treatment plant and two large soil-gas vapor extraction systems; preparing CERCLA environmental reports; drilling/sampling characterization wells and boreholes; performing treatability testing; and implementing Optimization Studies. Mr. Byrnes’ 2,500 gpm water treatment plant is currently being expanded to 3,750 gpm and is designed to remove carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, total chromium, hexavalent chromium, nitrate, uranium, and technetium-99 from groundwater. The soil-gas vapor extraction systems removed carbon tetrachloride from the vadose zone. Mr. Byrnes is a Registered Geologist/Hydrogeologist in Washington State, certified Hanford Site Project Management Professional (HS-PMP) and the author of the following Lewis Publishers/CRC Press/Taylor & Francis textbooks: “Field Sampling Methods for Remedial Investigations" (First, Second, and Third Editions) (Byrnes 1994, 2009, and 2022), “Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Terrorism: Emergency Response and Public Protection” (Byrnes 2003), and “Sampling and Surveying Radiological Environments” (Byrnes 2001). These books have been used at major universities across the country including Georgia Institute of Technology and Washington State University. Mr. Byrnes is an adjunct professor at Washington State University where he teaches practical environmental courses.
