My dad and I became workaholics in service of an organizational belief that our combined merits could overturn her karma and normalize her. It took a social science education at university for me to know more about mental health and Schizophrenia, and connect the dots to my mum's lived experiences. The Sociology course trained me to apply the Sociological lens to my life, turned my life around and emboldened me to leave my past behind. Sociology teaches real skills, and I am proud to graduate with it as my only major. These life experiences shaped my belief that the most urgent work to be done is driving extraordinary meaningful social change. And what I really care about is creating good opportunities for good people, so that we can join hands and contribute to shaping a better world, where businesses and charities look more alike than different. To that end, I am proud to have contributed my professional expertise to Amazon's best-selling book, Medicine without Meds, co-developed and delivered numerous workshops on trauma-informed care and building positive relationships, drawing on our research funded by the Wellcome Trust, developed a digital platform for students to work with counsellors to support their friends in distress, implemented translational research of the platform, published in the top-tier journal and most importantly, creating more than 20 jobs and internships combined for young people and seeing them move forward in their career brings me immense joy. I now take my passion to a new arena and work to make our Internet a safer place for all. How do we mitigate the effects of online harm so that children can grow up to become happy and healthy adults and have as much of the happy childhood that we had before social media and smartphones became indispensable in our lives? How do we shine a light on misinformation and disinformation using AI? What rules do we need to break now to enable a safer Internet in the future? These issues motivate my work, alongside squeezing my employer to create more opportunities for students. My wife says I only do four things in life: Eat, Sleep, Text and Read. But she forgot one more thing. I am a docent for the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre. It is a center that celebrates my heritage and shaped a deeper understanding of my identity.
