Matt Wayland’s Expertise In 2011, Matt Wayland became the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Canada's first full-time Political Action/Media Strategist. Matt's role is to provide training, education, and support to IBEW Local Union Leaders and members across the country, essentially building a National grassroots political program. Matt's career in the IBEW began in 2001 as a Construction and Maintenance Electrical apprentice in the Niagara Region. Quickly becoming involved in the Local Union apprenticeship program, he became an apprentice representative on the Local Joint Apprenticeship Council. Shortly after becoming a licensed Red Seal Construction and Maintenance electrician, Matt was elected by his members to serve a three year term on the Local Union Executive Board, and later chosen as the Recording Secretary on the Executive Board. After one term as an Executive Board member and raising the profile of the IBEW in the Niagara Region, Matt was successful in his bid to be elected as President of the Local Union in June of 2010. Although only serving 12 months as President before being hired onto his current role with IBEW Canada, Matt along with the elected officials at IBEW Local 303 had built strong relationships with Local, Provincial, and Federal elected officials, community groups such as Habitat for Humanity, and took a large step in purchasing the Local Unions very own building and training center in Niagara Falls. Today, Matt continues to motivate, educate, and engage our members in political action that has an impact on their trade, training, safety & careers. He is the IBEW's national point-person for the partnership with Helmets to Hardhats, a program that seeks to place Canadian vets into second careers in the skilled trades.
