Matthew Schechter’s Expertise I am an aspiring computational biologist and developer with specific interests in genomics, microbiomes, machine learning, and science communication. My research background and training span academia and industry in computational biology, microbiology, and sustainable food biotechnology. Currently, my research focuses on exploring the ecology of marine microbes in the global surface ocean and characterizing the genomics of polysaccharide-producing genes in prominent human gut microbes. To break down barriers to science and improve science communication, I develop open-source software in the multi-omics platform anvio.org and compose/teach tutorials in computational biology and programming. As I finish my graduate work at The University of Chicago's Microbiology program, I look forward to applying my skills to new challenges in therapeutics, biotechnology, and basic science. Skills: Computational Biology: Proficient in analyzing large-scale biological datasets, utilizing bioinformatics tools, and developing computational models for biological systems. Genomics: Skilled in genome assembly, annotation, and analysis, including next-generation sequencing data analysis. Microbiomes: Experienced in studying microbial communities, analyzing metagenomic data, and interpreting microbiome-host interactions. Science Communication: Strong ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences through written content, tutorials, and presentations. Programming: Proficient in programming languages Python and R with experience in developing open-source software and tools for the scientific community. Data Analysis: Skilled in statistical analysis, data visualization, and data interpretation to derive meaningful conclusions and support research findings.
