Matthew Shales’s Expertise I am a senior Mechanical Engineering student with a minor in Business Administration graduating in May of 2022. I have experience at two internships and participated in a number of diverse, hands-on, team-based engineering project experiences. I work 8-15 hours per week in my current internship, devote 3-7 hours per week as Chair of ASME, along with other co-curricular involvement, while maintaining a full academic schedule. I am seeking a full-time position and can be contacted at [email protected]. I think it was when I first joined the FIRST robotics team in High School that I knew I wanted to be an engineer. I had a great time applying kinematics through electronics, and it actually got me so excited that I started doing some around-the-house Arduino projects: creating my own universal remote, an environment ambient display, and a heliostat. After researching what careers would allow me to keep doing these kinds of things, I decided to become a Mechanical Engineer and chose to attend MSOE. While at MSOE, I’ve had a couple of great internships. As a J. W. Speaker’s Test and Automation Intern, my first project was to design a solution to prevent production dust from adhering to vehicle headlight lenses during the manufacturing process and to eliminate the need for manual dust removal by production operators. At my BluePoint Alert Solutions internship, I created technical documents with detailed competitor product information for use in new product development decisions, current product modifications, as well as an abridged version for sales team use. I’m currently working on a team of 6 on my Senior Design project to design and fabricate a human-powered, hydraulic vehicle to bring to the annual NFPA Fluid Power Challenge competition. I’m also very involved in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), where I have served in an elected leadership role on the board since my freshman year and currently as the club’s president. Through ASME I have been able to run events as big as a local engineering convention to bi-weekly meetings, as well as many different technical design challenges. All of my professional, academic, and co-curricular experiences have allowed me to develop strong leadership, teamwork, communication, cultural competency, and creative problem-solving skills.
