Maya Ranganathan’s Expertise I am a Chennai-based media scholar/researcher and academician. I study mediated identities -- the ways in which legacy media and the evolving communication spaces create and nurture political and socio-cultural identities. I am particularly fascinated by the ways in which the new spaces impact upon and direct the Indian political landscape--the national and the regional. Since the completion of my PhD on new media and nationalism, I have been focussing on the Indian media, particularly news television, to understand the intrersections between media and politics. I am a co-author of two books on Indian media and sole author of two others on Sri Lankan online spaces and scores of refereed academic articles, some of them in journals considered leaders in the field.* At least four of my articles have been prescribed reading material for courses in nationalism and transnationalism in universities in Canada, the UK and the US. For over two decades now, I have been a media educator teaching courses in journalism, media studies, and international communication. I have worked in India and spent over a decade in Australian universities as a research student, post doctoral fellow and lecturer/senior lecturer. I believe that the jobs of the future will not require domain knowledge as much as the ability to think critically, to be open to learning and to adapt to fast-changing environments. I returned to India during the second COVID wave and since then have been following with interest the growth of liberal arts and sciences universities in India. My most recent role in a greenfield university demanded that I keep pace with the debates surrounding the New Education Policy 2020 and the evolving regulatory mechanisms. I began my career as a journalist. I love writing and meeting people. I take pride in the fact that I can write for different audiences — for the discerning newspaper reader, for the subject expert, and for the picky regulatory authority — with equal ease. *Downloadable PDFs of some authored works are available at https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Maya_Ranganathan.
