Megan Lenardon’s Expertise I research and teach microbiology at UNSW Sydney. My research focusses on serious fungal pathogens of humans. I study the basic biology of fungal pathogens to try and find new ways to kill them. Opportunistic invasive fungal pathogens cause over two million life-threatening infections per year worldwide, with mortality ranging from 20–95%. At least as many, if not more people die from invasive fungal diseases every year than from malaria, or tuberculosis, or breast cancer, or prostate cancer. I have been studying the cell and molecular biology of Candida albicans, the most common serious fungal pathogen of humans, since 2005. Working with Profs. Neil Gow and Al Brown in the Aberdeen Fungal Group (AFG), my research focussed on fungal call wall structure and biosynthesis, with a particular interest in the regulation of chitin synthesis during the growth of C. albicans, as well as the immune recognition of fungal cell wall components, and C. albicans stress responses. I set up my own group in the AFG in 2012, and in 2017, returned to UNSW as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences. Research in my group aims to address the urgent clinical need for new therapies for fungal diseases in innovative ways. I study fungal cell wall structure and biosynthesis to identify new anti-fungal drug targets and strategies. I work with chemical engineers to develop novel antifungal polymers. I also study the interactions of anaerobic gut bacteria with C. albicans with a view to developing microbiome-based therapeutics to prevent life-threatening C. albicans infections from occurring (see https://research.unsw.edu.au/people/dr-megan-denise-lenardon for more details). I am the convenor of the Eukaryotic Microbes Special Interest Group (SIG) and co-convenor of the Gut Microbes SIG of the Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM), a member of the ASM NSW/ACT Branch committee, an editorial board member of The Cell Surface, and I review grants for major funding bodies.
