Mike Plouffe’s Expertise I have transported or responded to approximately 5,000 patients requiring emergency medical services over the past 14 years as an EMT. Most likely, nearly half of my time in the field working on an ambulance was derived from my volunteer experience with Old Lyme Volunteer Ambulance Association, Inc. I began responding to 911 calls in Old Lyme as an EMT the very day I earned my certification in October of 1997, instantly getting my feet wet in the job I love so much. I truly love caring for other people in their times of dire need, and nothing is more satisfying than saving or changing someone's life for the better. Very often, I get to witness the effect of the direct interventions I apply to injured and ill patients right before my eyes, in the relatively small amount of time I have with them, and that's extremely gratifying and fulfilling to me. Despite spending several years in college working toward a degree completely unrelated to Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and working several jobs in the IT field, I was (and am) ultimately drawn to what was originally a volunteer hobby helping my town as an EMT for our volunteer ambulance. So, after many years working and volunteering at the low end as an EMT, and after several years not working fighting my disabling and debilitating disease, I am ready to return to college and earn my RN degree to allow me to continue working in medicine in an even more fulfilling role! I am overcoming all of the challenges planted in my way, and I will return to school (hopefully in spring 2012 or soon after) to achieve my first goal of becoming an RN. My goals after that remain to be seen, but they do include climbing even higher up the ladder of medical care, perhaps as an APRN or even a PA someday. I am determined and ready to begin the next part of my career in medicine and look forward to it anxiously and eagerly. Specialties: While I have no specialties officially, I do feel that I'm quite proficient at spotting a collapsed lung well before others are able to. (Those who know me well will not only understand this but also find it amusing as well!)
