Ming-Qiang Zhang’s Expertise An energetic drug discovery R&D executive, Ming-Qiang Zhang's R&D leadership experience spans the whole spectrum of pharmaceutical industry from biotechs (Amgen), specialty pharma (Shire) to large pharma companies (Merck, Roche). In Amgen, he is responsible for the establishment and management of the company's China R&D, including development and implementation of the company's regional R&D strategy covering drug discovery, translational research, clinical development and external innovation. He is also responsible for attracting, retaining and developing talents for regional R&D activities. As a drug hunter, he has led the discovery of several candidate drugs in therapeutic areas of CNS, immunology, oncology and infectious diseases including the discovery of Bridion (sugammadex), the first-in-class selective reversal agent for neuromuscular blockade, approved in >40 countries in the world. He has coauthored and coinvented >100 scientific publications and patents, and is a co-recipient of RSC Malcolm Campbell Memorial Prize (2007) and Nexxus Life Science Award for Innovation (2008). He is also an entrepreneur. He initiated and cofounded the Shire spin-out ViroChem Pharma Inc. that had discovered and developed several potential best-in-class antiviral agents before it was acquired by Vertex in 2009 for 380 MM.
