I started out on the Mainframe Capacity Planning team. On that team, I was responsible for installing and maintaining CA-MICS. I worked with my team in using MICS and MXG to process SMF data for reporting and forecasting. I developed a process to forecast mainframe capacity for budgeting. Our team was also responsible for maintaining the system balance. Our job was to help tune the systems to keep the workload balanced between the LPARS. After 9.5 years, I moved over to the Mainframe DB2 database team. As a Systems DBA, I have primarily been working on db2 system upgrades. I learned how to upgrade DB2 systems when upgrading Db2 8 to Db2 9. I lead the db2 upgrade project when upgrading from Db2 9 to Db2 10 as well as going from Db2 10 to Db2 11. I am teaching another associate how to upgrade db2 systems with our current upgrade project going from Db2 11 to Db2 12. The upgrade process has taught me how to be patient when working with customers to get the systems upgraded. There is a lot of coordination that has to happen to successfully schedule the upgrade with minimum impact to the applications and business areas. The upgrade process has also helped develop the skills needed to debug Db2 system issues during production impacting events. As a DBA, I set up the secure ports in db2 to enable certificate authentication when connecting to db2. I have learned the value of working with the support teams, without their help, my job would have been a lot harder.
