Paul Chapman’s Expertise Aged sixty, a keen historian with over forty years association with the Ypres salient, Belgium. Following the publication of my first two books ‘A Haven In Hell’ - Talbot house, Poperinghe, and ‘In The Shadow of Hell’ - Life behind the lines, Poperinghe 1914-18 I have spent the past twelve years researching and collating details regarding casualties buried and commemorated in the Ypres salient. What began with an account of two men killed during the Christmas truce of 1914, research and an eye for that which is often overlooked has led me to the stories and extended details in excess of 23,000 casualties to be found within the confines of this region of the western front. Well-known and respected for my specialised knowledge of the cemeteries and memorials of the salient - until the late nineties I regularly organised tours to the region - as a freelance guide I am often requested to accompany small groups during my visits to the salient. Regularly to be found walking around the cemeteries with a notebook or clip-board, my many visits have been rewarded by visitors I have encountered who - by their willingness to impart and permit me to record their stories - have ensured their ‘lost’ family member will not be forgotten. With retirement fast approaching it is my ambition to become a full-time researcher of casualties and guide - Ypres salient. In the meantime I am working on two projects - ‘Brother’s In Arms’ being extended details regarding multiple family members buried or commemorated within the salient, and ‘Reflections’ a collection of poetry and prose. Lectured widely throughout the U.K. on Talbot House, Poperinghe (advisor to a BBC Radio documentary). Sept. 2014, Completed, Edited, Submitted the work regarding 20,000 plus casualties - 'In Memory & In Mourning' - scheduled for publication in nine parts commencing May - June 2017.
