His reseach has generated more than 130 peer-reviewed publications on top journals. He has published/edited three academic books. He joined KAUST in 2009 as a founding faculty member and was the chair of Environmental Science & Engineering program at KAUST from 2013 to 2017. He spent almost four years at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (from Aug. 2019 to June 2023) while on a no-pay leave from KAUST. He joined Sun Yat-sen University on July 1st of 2023 and is the founding director of Institute of Carbon Neutrality Strategies and Green Development Technologies at Sun Yat-sen University. He received The Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Water Award in the category of ‘Distinguished Researcher’ in 2023. He was awarded ‘Zijin Quanxing Distinguished Alumni Award’ of Nanjing University(南京大学紫金全兴杰出校友奖) in 2021. He received the 9th Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) (2020).
