Pierre Divenyi’s Expertise Have been studying the "cocktail-party effect" in normal-hearing young and elderly persons. For the last decade, I have been working with computer scientists in an effort to find a machine solution to poor speech intelligibility in noise. In 2014 René Carré, myself, and Mohamad Mrayati undertook the complex task of writing a book on a physical theory of speech production, to be published by de Gruyter in late 2016 or early 2017, with the title "Speech: A dynamic process." I have also organized international workshops and a NATO Advanced Study Institute on the study of speech dynamics and on the separation of speech from acoustic interference by humans and machines. My connections and collaborations with computational experts have been undertaken with the aim of finding a solution for speech understanding dysfunction in aging, and designing a device to remedy it. Over my research career, I collaborated with many scientists in the U.S. (e.g., Ira Hirsh, Robert Efron, Steven Greenberg, Barbara Shinn-Cunningham, Daniel Ellis, DeLiang Wang) and abroad, such as Jens Blauert (Germany), René Carré and Jean-Sylvain Liénard (France), Bjorn Lindblom (Sweden), Albert Bregman (Canada), Klara Vicsi (Hungary). I have also been visiting professor and visiting scientist at universities in Paris, Orsay, Montreal, Bochum, Budapest, Vienna, Padova, Lyon, Marseille, Havana, and Niigata, and lectured at many more places. My musical career, much slowed down by my research, owes enormously to the overwhelming early influence by György and Marta Kurtag and my piano studies with Bela Siki. For the last few years I have been partnering with my baritone signer UCB statistics PhD and communications company owner friend Barry Zuckerman to explore the vast and breathtakingly beautiful voice-piano literature. So far, we have given three recitals (with different programs) and are planning to give more.
