Quoc Tran’s Expertise I should have known I would grow up to be a software developer. I wrote my first program when I was a young middle-school student. Back in those days, schools did not see the value of teaching students how to code, so I had to teach myself everything. Fortunately, I grew up during the dawn of affordable 56kbps dial-up internet. I was able to read through hundreds of forums, ask questions, and get answers. At the age of 11, I was talking to complete strangers on the internet! Thank you, Google. Being of that age, I played a lot of PC video games. There was one game in particular that had me playing for hours in one sitting, day after day, just to reach the next level. Oh, it was more addicting than Candy Crush, and that's saying something! The hours I had to put into the game was what motivated me to learn code. If I could write code to play the game for me, I could go to school and come home and be a level higher and a little richer! My first taste of programming was with a macro software called "AC Tool". It was written in some unknown scripting language, but had every aspect of a typical program: loops, functions, case statements, etc. Using the program I wrote, I went from leveling up once a week to once a day! Eventually I found more enjoyment from figuring out how to improve my code and adding features than playing my video games. Fast forward my life to college and I’m now making code to control autonomous robots, 3D printers, and LiDAR sensors to scan a room in 3D. Now I am bridging the gap between software and the physical world, making something move by writing code. Today, I am fortunate to work in a field where I do what I love. I have written code to operate robots carrying a thousand pounds of explosives at my previous work. Now, I am developing code to aid in the Osiris-REx mission, where a spacecraft will fly to an asteroid, grab a sample, and bring it back. Who knows what we'll find!
