Ramakrishna Kotla’s Expertise Ramakrishna Kotla is a computer systems architect, engineer, and a researcher. He works in the areas of distributed systems, cloud computing and storage, operating systems, and applied security. Most recently, at AWS, he worked with CEO and other senior leadership in defining and executing strategic projects to transform some of the fastest growing services in AWS to cloud-native architectures and also helped start new lines of businesses driving significant revenues along the way. Specifically, he worked on re-designing Amazon Elasticsearch Service to separate storage and compute, build UltraWarm (reduce cost by 10x) and Cold storage tiers (cost of S3 with a reduction of 30x) so that customers can scale to 10s of PBs of data at 1/10th cost. He rearchitected the transaction and storage layers of Redshift to make it cloud-native. He is currently working on the evolution of data lakes across analytics services. He also serves on the program committees of Computer Systems conferences--SOSP, OSDI, NSDI, and SoCC--and advises VCs, startups, and students in his spare time. Prior to that he was a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, where he built geo-distributed storage system for Azure cloud, cache and memory isolation across VMs in hypervisors, security primitives using TPMs and secure boot for Windows operating systems. He also built ARM processor models and h/w-s/w co-verification tools at Synopsys prior to his PhD. For his doctoral dissertation, he built multi-cloud storage system called SafeStore on top of S3 (in 2006/2007 when AWS was the only cloud) and the distributed BFT (Byzantine Fault tolerant) consensus protocol called Zyzzyva, which forms the basis for some of the decentralized ledger protocols before Bitcoin was born in 2008. Zyzzyva and SafeStore received best paper awards in top systems conferences (SOSP'2007 and Usenix'2007); also featured in CACM research highlights section, which features the best work in computer science across various sub-disciplines. Specialties: Distributed systems, Cloud storage and computing, Operating systems, Storage and File systems, and Security
