Richard Seger’s Expertise Here is an interesting question, “what if HR leaders treated their employees and job candidates like customers?” As a long-term HR leader who has built and transformed HR functions, this is exactly how I approach my role. It’s hard to imagine business owners subjecting their customers to clumsy processes, limited communication, and subpar service – they would be out of business quickly. The same holds true for me, and in response, I focus on improving culture, reducing paperwork/red tape, handling all situations (even terminations) with positive intent, and opening communication channels. The employee and candidate experience is drastically enhanced when technology is used strategically. At every step in my career, I have sourced and implemented technology platforms that streamlined HR services, made training/development accessible, and slashed time-to-fill goals. An additional benefit to leveraging human capital technology is that it generates analytics and insights that are used by leaders to shape people strategy and make informed decisions. Continuous process improvement is also a key driver in engaging employees and candidates. HR, in my opinion, should be a business partner to the organization and make life easier for employees. Too often, HR installs lengthy and administratively-burdensome processes/programs that distract leaders and team members from serving their customers. With that, I evaluate/improve all HR processes annually (based on organizational feedback) and remove traditional programs (e.g., formal performance appraisal) that do not add value.
