I have also become adept at interpreting and explaining land use law, especially CEQA and the local Zoning Ordinance, both one-on-one with applicants at the CDD counter and in public hearings before the Planning Commission. As a planner, my role is often to serve as the connecting link between experts in different fields. In some meetings I'll be the person with the strongest background in environmental systems, and in others I'll be the weakest... but I might be the strongest legal analyst or the most tech-savvy. A versatile background allows me to adapt my approach to best complement the current team and situation. This has been key, as incorporating as many perspectives as possible is fundamental to building a sustainable future. Prior to working as a Planner, I was the Aquatics Director for the Long Beach Sea Base. I trained dozens of lifeguards and camp counselors and taught classes on aquatics skills and ecology. I also contributed to the design of the program. I lobbied for and created several programs which consistently sold out, including a class on Sustainability. As my goals require building a wide range of expertise and multiple specializations, I am constantly looking for both formal and informal opportunities to expand my capabilities. It isn't simply a lifelong love of learning, although that is part of it - it's that I want to be as equipped as possible to tackle the complicated problems facing society.
