  I am an Associate Professor of Gender & Sexuality at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). My current research interests are in cultural and queer politics in South Asia & the diaspora. I have recently completed a British Academy funded project on South Asian Queer diasporic organising & cultural production in Britain and a Carnegie Trust funded project on Queer film festivals and community making in India and about to start a three-year AHRC funded project 'Crafting Sustainability & Equitability' which will explore cultural labour in the Indian handicraft sector with an aim to address inequalities of gender, sexuality, religion, and caste from an intersectional perspective. Prior to my current role I was Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow where I hold a Honorary Senior Research Fellowship. I have held Visiting Fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Fordham University, UCSB, Loughborough University. To date I have published 12 books (authored and edited) and over 50 journal articles and book chapters. I have collaborated with local and international academics, policymakers, activists and government organisations primarily in the U.K., USA, India and China. I have also held teaching and research posts at Loughborough University, University of Southampton, University of Sussex, University of the Arts London. My research has been funded variously by the AHRC, UKRI India, Royal Society of Asian Affairs, Royal Society of Edinburgh, British Academy, Wellcome Trust, EPSRC and the Carnegie Trust. I am also a Labour and Cooperative Party Councillor in the London Borough of Newham. I was elected on May 2018 and appointed as Commissioner for Social Integration and Equalities from 2019 until 2022. I was re-elected on May 2022 and was appointed Chair of the Pensions Committee until January 2023. On May 2023 I was appointed Deputy Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Equalities & Culture providing overall strategic leadership on the council’s cultural policy, social justice charter and equalities agenda.
