Ruby Phelan’s Expertise Ruby Phelan is a passionate Writer-Director and Feminist Activist who champions women’s liberation on screen, behind the camera and in wider storytelling. She is currently the Activist in Residence at The Feminist Centre for Racial Justice based at SOAS university. Ruby began her artistic journey as a professional dancer and toured her own choreography throughout the UK and Europe. She attended The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, The Fontainebleau School of Acting in France and was granted a scholarship to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on the MA Text and Performance programme where she specialised in directing and writing for both stage and screen. Her debut short film 'The Mermaid & The Artist' won Best Film at Rome short film festival, was nominated at Cannes short film festival, featured on BBC Radio Four and had an extended interview on The Girls on film podcast. She went on to shoot her second film ‘This Girl Lost Her Body’ in 2021 which was met with similar industry acclaim and a handful of screenings across the globe. Ruby was Director's Assistant on season five of Netflix’s The Crown where she assisted director Alex Gabassi. She was simultaneously employed as a research and development assistant on a project with Jodie Caron. Ruby went on to direct a large female ensemble in Natalie Ann Boyd’s Edinburgh festival hit ‘Honeypot’ at The Other Palace Theatre, co-wrote, directed and produced ‘Glassboy’ which premiered at The Coronet Theatre in Notting Hill and premiered both of her short films to New York City for a three night screening in central Manhattan. Ruby is the author-illustrator of book series ‘Tales from Torpen’, developing two television ‘Swine’ & ‘Hanna & Greta’ with the assistance of ‘The Young Vic Genesis Network’ and has been collaborating with producer Cheri Darbon in forging the world of her debut feature film ‘Viper’ Her script has been shortlisted for the Rianne Pictures tenth anniversary screenplay competition and made it to the final of the BBC Drama Writers Room.
