Sarah Graff’s Expertise I am an anthropological archaeologist who studies early economies and social relationships connected to city life and material exchange. My research and teaching looks at the varied social interactions between producers, merchants, consumers, and political authorities. This includes the production, exchange, and use of ceramic containers as well as the preparation and cooking of food. I am also interested in the use of space within and between archaeological sites, and how different (perhaps unequal) individuals lived and worked together in both regulated and unregulated ways. I am currently an Honors Faculty Fellow at Barrett, The Honors College, and affiliated faculty with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University. I teach full-time and I am the Director of the Barrett Writing Center. From 2006-2010, I was a Harper-Schmidt Fellow in the Society of Fellows and Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences at The University of Chicago. I held a Postdoctoral American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (2010-2011). My most cited publication is "The Menial Art of Cooking: Archaeological Studies of Cooking and Food Preparation" (University Press of Colorado, 2012). This book examines cooking as a social activity connected to strategies of statecraft, social change, religion and economics.
