Sean Nockles’s Expertise My career can be divided in to two distinct phases. Initially, I was focused on the technologies themselves, many of which are firmly part of history, such a RSX-11M and RTL/2 from my days as a programmer. In many respects, I was a stereotypical “IT Guy”, working behind the scenes, seemingly happier dealing with machines than people. During my time with Oracle, that began to change. As a senior member of the team, I took on a mentoring role. Not because it was a required part of the job, but because I found enjoyment in helping others achieve their goals. When I felt it was time to move on, for the first time I looked at roles that, whilst still technology grounded, were more outward facing. Intel Online Services offered that opportunity, and this marks the start of the second, people oriented, phase of my career. It soon became clear that the business model Intel employed wouldn’t survive the bursting of the dot-com bubble, so I moved to Veritas, again taking a role where I could engage with, and assist, customers. After 2 years, a position came up within the Education department, as an instructor. Taking up the role started the second phase in earnest. Being part of the team allowed me to travel across Europe, the Middle East, to South Africa, and India, dealing with many cultures and nationalities. And interacting with others as we had students attending courses from the entire region, further expanding my understanding of the world in which we are living and working. Moving in to management allowed me to explore other avenues of individual development. I have experienced many management styles over the years. My own approach isn’t primarily based on telling others what to do, but to make sure members of my team have the skills and resources they need to be successful in their role. Alongside that, career progression is very important, so giving people the ability to expand their capabilities is a core motivational tool.
