  I have model a commitment to diversity and social justice through my education and work. My Master’s thesis “The College Learning Experience” focused on how universities can better assist underserved high school students gain access to higher education. I highlighted the unique position in which underserved students often find themselves, trying balance unpreparedness with navigating a confusing and sometimes seemingly unwelcome system. I advocated for universities to address these particular set of needs through initiatives that engage the students earlier on their academic paths in ways that affirm these students as scholars. My work as an academic advisor gives me a unique opportunity to put into practice many of the guiding principles of my research. This afforded me the opportunity to engage with students holistically. I work with them to balance the rigors of academic life with the problems they face being low-income, students of color, being designated an AB540 or international student and the LGBTQ communities. I encourage my students to take pride in their life journeys and to know that they can achieve their goals. I myself strive to continue my education on the various areas of social justice and diversity.
