Sohail Mushtaq’s Expertise Intro: I am an experimental plasma physicist with a specialization in plasma chemistry, plasma processes, plasma diagnostics, optical emission, and mass spectrometry. With over 10 years of working experience, I have been actively involved in international collaborative research projects in the field. My expertise lies in understanding and exploring the behavior of plasmas, particularly in relation to chemical reactions and industrial processes. I have extensively worked on developing and employing advanced diagnostics techniques such as optical emission and mass spectrometry to analyze plasma properties and study the underlying physical and chemical phenomena. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working alongside diverse teams of researchers from around the world, fostering collaborations that have contributed to advancements in plasma science and technology. I am passionate about unraveling the complexities of plasmas and their applications in various fields. Educational background: I received my M.Sc. degree in 2005 and M.Phil. degree with a major in Plasma Physics and Atomic & Molecular Spectroscopy in 2007, both from Government College University (GCU) Lahore. My M.Phil. research work focused on “Optimization of discharge conditions for plasma nitriding by optical emission spectroscopy”. During my M.Phil., I was selected for a scholarship at the ICSC-WORLD Laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Salam Chair in the Physics Department at GCU, Lahore. After obtaining my M.Phil. degree, I was selected as a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Imperial College London. My PhD research work was revolved around the “Effects of traces of molecular gases in analytical glow discharge: glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and time of flight mass spectrometry studies”. For my PhD research work, I conducted the first multi-line study on oxygen as an impurity in glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS). The results of my studies using Fourier Transform Optical Emission Spectroscopy (FT-OES) and Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (ToF-MS), were reported to investigate the effects of controlled addition of oxygen (0-1 % v/v) on observed spectra from a Grimm-type glow discharge generated in argon plasma with various pure samples (such as iron, titanium, copper and gold) and calamine (an oxide layer sample). I had successfully completed my thesis in June 2011 and subsequently held position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Computing, and working with Prof. Edward Steers until Feb 2017.
