Stefanie Scanlon’s Expertise I believe mathematics education is becoming increasingly important in a society that is rapidly advancing in technology. As a mathematics teacher, it is my job to make math more interesting and engaging for my students. I believe in exploratory learning and cooperative activities, as well as the use of Bloom’s taxonomy to increase conceptual understanding. These approaches to teaching will increase students understanding and their ability to discuss math. I believe that all students can learn math and succeed, as well as even enjoy math. I will treat all my students with the same expectations, respect and compassion. I believe than an open classroom environment, where students are encouraged to ask questions and dig deep into the material is the ideal environment for learning math. I will incorporate Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences to reach the diverse group of students I will have in my classrooms. To do so, I will include multiple representations of the material throughout the units. In my classroom I will have a standard structure of activities that most classes will follow, and students will know their expectations during those activities. I believe being organized and prepared, and therefore preventing disruptions, is a better alternative to discipline. Students deserve more than one opportunity to show that they understand the material, and I will facilitate that with the use of journals, group activities, and projects on top of traditional paper assessments. I believe that a teacher’s job does not end when the last bell of the day rings. It is my job as a teacher to be there for every student every day; they deserve to have someone on their side, pushing them to be the best that they can be. I will be involved in the planning and supervision of activities as well as continuing professional development. I believe a teacher is never done learning, and must always be looking for better ways to help their students.
