Stephanie Mckeown’s Expertise Goal: to enhance treatment of solid tumours through targeting the treatment-resistant hypoxic cell sub populations. In the body, hypoxic cells are found almost exclusively in tumours. Hypoxic cells have very low oxygen levels, often less than 0.1%. The tumour cells that survive this stress are resistant to standard therapies and often are more malignant and more capable of spreading (metastasing) to other sites in the body. Experiments carried out in my laboratory at Ulster University provided much of the data for the preclinical development of the novel unidirectional hypoxia-activated prodrugs, OCT1002 and OCT1004. Currently I work as a Director of OncoTherics Ltd UK, assisting in the progression to clinical trial of these two compounds and the development of related technologies. I am interested in further collaborations that involve the preclinical and clinical development of these novel unidirectional cancer prodrugs, which specifically target hypoxic tumour cells. Uniquely these drugs have excellent tissue penetration even across the blood brain barrier. In addition, once located within hypoxic tumour cells they are reduced to stable persistent compounds which compromise the ability of tumours to regrow and metastasize. This provides a means of enhancing the effect of the majority of other cancer treatments such as standard chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy all of which fail to effectively eradicated tumour cells which are hypoxic. Specialties: Pre-clinical investigation of novel anti-tumour drugs with a focus on physiological responses and genetic changes.
