Steve O'brien’s Expertise A seasoned professional in the Powered Access and Lifting Industries, I grew up as a third generation member of the construction world. I started my days filling skips and labouring during my school holidays but by the late 80s I decided to change career. Studying for a Btec national Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering I passed with distinction and worked in comms in various trading floors in the city and docklands (and overseas to Milan and Dublin occasionally). I returned to construction in the Early 2000s when a a qualification I picked up working in comms strangely came in handy after I was made redundant. I retrained as a MEWP Operator and Slinger Signaller and my final role in comms as a business installation planner gave me the experience I needed to become an Appointed Person for Lifting Operations in 2005. My experience in both Lifting and Powered access has led me to have many conversations with people both on-site and off and consider myself to be safety driven wherever I am in the world. I can often be found on Laing O’Rourke sites around the country liaising with subcontractors over MEWP use, positioning, emergency lowering, rescue plans and getting them to put their plan into place there and then… after all, an emergency doesn’t plan ahead so we have to plan for it instead.
