While at The Travelers he returned to school at night, and earned his MBA from the University of Puget Sound in 1980. He was a board member of Associated Builders and Contractors of Washington (ABC) for three years and a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee of The Associated General Contractors (AGC) for many more. He has also been a frequent speaker or panel member at many construction industry events, and for twenty years taught a one-night class on surety bonds to graduate Civil Engineering students at UW.
