  I figured out early on that I wasn’t going to be an All Black. I enjoyed playing rugby, but I also enjoy my hunting and fishing. A key hunting season that I have never missed, starts in the middle of rugby season. While the local club coach was ok with me missing a few games, I assumed that if I was picked for the AB's (lets be fair here - NZ rugby would be in a world of hurt if I was nearing selection), their management might have other ideas about missing games. So, I left school and did a hospitality course for 12 months before spending the next 7 years working in various hotels around the country side. My career in the IT industry started after one of the suppliers of the hotel computer system I had become familiar with, asked me if I would be interested in working for them. Some 25 years later and a few different IT roles throughout that time, I'm now providing strategic advice to organisations about technology that's appropriate for their business. What I learned in the hotel industry was service, and how to talk with people. What I learned in the technology industry was a whole bunch of technical know-how and even more jargon! And I quickly learned that someone who understands technology, can deliver service, and can communicate the "technical stuff" to people in plain English, was a rare and valuable commodity in the IT industry. Throughout my career, I've taken opportunities when presented and had the privilege to work with a lot of very smart people. I've taken the good stuff I've seen and used that to help others. And I've confined the rubbish I’ve seen to my portfolio of “what not to do”. I don’t know everything and don’t pretend to. I do know how to find the answers. I pride myself in being able to deliver on: -Technology and strategy -Troubleshooting -Infrastructure and network design/management -Application integration -Listening, asking the right questions and joining the dots -And most importantly, working with people!
