The mobility industry was among the worst hit in the pandemic and it is satisfying to know that in fiscal year 2022-23, record profits in the Company’s 24-year history have been achieved, 2.8X the previous best! The Avis Lease business in India was set up in 2012. India is the only corporate Avis Budget Group entity with a lease business. The strategy for the new business was developed and the Boards of both the JV partners were persuaded to invest in the new business. Within 10 years of the launch of the business, Avis India became the highest margin and net profit vehicle lease business in India and the critical factor for success has been the effective management of vehicle residual value risk and credit risk over 36-60 months in a category riddled with regulatory interventions. The Avis India assignment has made me a master practitioner of risk-management and establishment of new businesses reaching industry-leading profitability on a short runway. Analysis of data to tease out long-term trends to manage future risk is critical in the context of multi-year impacts of today’s decisions. Driving company-wide adoption of data-based decision-making institutionalizes a business-enhancing approach to risk. The effective management of the disruption caused by decarbonization of the mobility industry needs an astute assessment of the pace of change and the segments leading the change. The technology road map for decarbonization is fraught with varying levels of electrification/hybridization/hydrogenation & a canny approach is critical.
