Thomas Marshall’s Expertise My education and first career were in experimental solid state physics, where I studied electrical transport and optical properties of a variety of materials and devices, ranging from silicon MOSFETs to ZnSSe multi-quantum-well lasers, with quite a few complex composite materials in between. I now work in software, heading the Architecture Office at Bloomberg LP, where my focus is on large-scale software architecture and physical design, a subject I studied and worked on under the tutelage of John Lakos. I apply John's principles to problems large and small within Bloomberg Engineering. In this context, I'm in the early stages of working on an open-source "Architectural Pipeline" project, comprising a large graph-based data base of software, the tools and machinery to collect and analyze the structure of that software, and an interactive GUI to display arbitrarily large connectivity graphs, annotated with classifications of the nature of the connections (edges). Since 2013 I've been following Quantum Computing and giving an introductory talk, both internally and at local universities. With recent developments in the field, I'm now actively working with the academic community in NYC and beyond to explore practical applications and algorithm development. In April 2019 I spoke at the 2nd Joint Quantum Symposium at Columbia Univ. More generally, I consider myself a professional solver of large, complex problems, where a broad, systematic approach, including both human and technological factors, is at least as important to success as is domain-specific skills, which are learned as needed. Recently, I've also been applying my experience and toolkit as a physicist to the topic of decision-making, and in particular to the overlap (or, often, lack thereof) of human and machine decision-making.
