Tim Sessions’s Expertise Even as a kid I liked to solve problems. When I was six, I created a remote-control system to turn the light in my room on and off. It involved a lot of string and tape. Today we are fortunate to live in a time rich in new technologies that are easily accessible. Lights can be controlled by a spoken command, no string needed. I find this new tech to be fascinating. For instance, today my new Argon IoT development kit arrived. This weekend will be spent seeing what kinds of cool applications it can be used for. Professionally I am a seasoned ASIC/FPGA digital design and verification expert. Engineering was a natural choice for me when I went to college and electrical engineering was especially intriguing. There are many interesting opportunities for my skills which confirms it was a good choice. I currently lead a team of firmware engineers developing FPGAs. Besides the usual work of defining requirements, design and verification, there are other opportunities to solve problems. We needed a way to track tasks and progress, so I created a tracking system using GitHub. For debugging a design, we often use LEDs to monitor signals. I developed the embedded software and integration firmware to use a touch screen. We can now look at many more signals, and query registers for their values directly on the board. Previously I worked as an Applications Engineer for Mentor Graphics. It was a fun challenge to work with a variety of customers to solve problems and increase efficiency. I enjoy the challenge of solving problems, but I also like helping people. Technical sales allowed me to do both. For example, I had a customer that was struggling to meet their deadlines because they were unable to completely verify all the functionality of their ASIC design. The problem is inherent when randomness is the basis for the verification methodology. The customer solution was to put more resources onto the problem. The solution I proposed was a product we had that removed the randomness and replaced it with intelligence. The engineers were too busy to evaluate the product, so I integrated it into their environment. It proved to be extremely effective. This engineering team now relies on this product to consistently meet their deadlines with fewer resources. This is a win-win situation and is very fulfilling. Identify the problem, break it down to its root cause and present a solution.
