I retired after a career in higher education which spanned 34+ years. For 23 years I was a chief human resources officer at Clayton State University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Virginia -- its Academic and Health Sciences Divisions including the UVA Health System with a 600-bed Medical Center, Private Clinics, and Kluge Children's Rehab Center. I started my career by following in my father’s footsteps into the Army. I attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. I was commissioned after 4 years as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry Branch. During my 7+ years in the Army, I led two platoons (Infantry & Scout), served as company executive officer, battalion S-3 Air operations, and I simultaneously had two company commands. I attained qualifications as Airborne, Ranger, French Commando, and Combat Tactical Air Controller. What I loved most about my career was the art of leading. Leading was challenging, fun and a privilege, and as a leader, I was faithful in placing those I led ahead of myself. Over the decades I developed the “Must Do's for Individual and Organizational Leadership Excellence, “ which I preface with “The Rough Riders Dozen of...”.
