Wei-Jin Zheng’s Expertise I have 6+ years of experience in mathematically modeling and numerically simulating the mechanics of materials using molecular dynamics simulations. Additionally, I had 2 years of experience in simulating and analyzing electromagnetic fields and with the finite element method (FEM). My overall research in The University of Texas at Austin’s Ph.D. program contributes to the understanding of fracture mechanics in both hard and soft matters in response to external stress loading. My research focuses on: 1) fracture networks due to hydraulic fracturing in shale rocks under various stress conditions and 2) static cracks with unusual pointy tips in highly-stretched natural rubber sheets due to strain-induced crystallization. The previous research that I conducted in National Taiwan University’s master's program focused on electromagnetic fields in metals and metamaterials with an emphasis on evanescent waves at interface. I developed a module integrating the stress anisotropy for 3D hydraulic fractures in a simulator based on LAMMPS (a C++ package) running on a supercomputer. I successfully showed the tilted, twisted, bending, and branching hydraulic fractures due to various stress states in shale rocks. Also, I built a code in C++ from scratch to simulate the static cracks in natural rubber. I modeled the phase separation between regular rubber and crystalline rubber in the system that had not been mathematically formulated. I parallelized my code and used both a time-evolution algorithm (Verlet integration) and an optimization algorithm (the conjugate gradient method) to quickly reach the energy minimization state of rubber. In my master's study, I conducted numerical simulations with COMSOL (an FEM software) of surface plasmon polariton. To fully understand its eigenmodes in a system of two metallic long parallel wires, I investigated each mode's dispersion relation curve, propogation length, and their constituent single wire's modes.
