William Scanlon’s Expertise I like to jokingly refer to myself as a super nerd when non techies ask me about work. My journey into the world of IT began as a teenager in the early 90s with a 1200 baud modem, a monochrome dumb terminal and the phone number of a local bulletin board I had discovered. I was instantly hooked. Before long I was staying up through the night teaching myself to code and running my own bulletin board built on hardware purchased with lawn mowing money. Professionally my career began in 1997 as a junior in High School. A friend's father, who was a COBOL programmer, realized he could pay me next to nothing to write code for his contracts. Since next to nothing was a heck of a lot more than a High School junior normally makes, I jumped at the chance. These were the bubble years and million dollar contracts were being handed to anyone who knew how to use a compiler and pronounce the word automate. CTSI managed to land the contract to write the back end software for BMG Music's subscription service and I eventually became the lead developer on that project. When the tech bubble burst in 2001 CTSI, like a lot of small development shops, went under. I spent a few years bouncing around on several contracts in the financial industry at Citi, Goldman, MMC etc, never finding that magic recipe of work that was challenging, interested me and was at a company I believed in. Then I walked into an interview at Bloomberg. Bloomberg had always been known as an intense, R&D led company and I was impressed by the company's culture and ethics. Joining Bloomberg in 2003 was like finding the land of the lost but rather then dinosaurs it was the golden age of IT. The place was filled with MIT engineers and technology savants. Within its glass conference rooms and open floor plans Tom Secunda and Mike Bloomberg had quietly cultivated Park Avenue's own thriving version of silicon valley. 15 years on and I am still captivated and inspired.
