Wouter Smets’s Expertise As a teacher educator and researcher I am interested in the challenges and opportunities of teaching in heterogeneous settings. My fundamental and practice-oriented research focusses on pinpointing how and why teachers feel challenged by heterogeneity, and identifying low-stake opportunities to use heterogeneity as an added value in the teaching process. I worked with in-service teachers in multicultural settings in the city of Antwerp (Belgium) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands), and also with teachers in more traditional educational settings who are motivated to increase equity in their classroom. I am increasingly focusing on subject specific didactics of history and social sciences teaching. These are typically subjects for which multicultural and heterogeneous settings tend to challenge teachers, but they also present interesting chances for teachers to maximize learning potential of students. In this field my focus lies at supporting teachers to use and valorize heterogeneity as a chance for learning.
